Can healthy food be sexy?
Ummm… I mean SECCe
Can food be our medicine? Can it heal us from disease and dis-ease?
Pause… so why am I writing a blog about healthy eating? Because a healthy spirit needs a healthy body. And you can go further spiritually with a stronger and healthier body, and a well-nourished mind.
So let’s get back to it shall we.. 😊
If you’re answering with a resounding “YES!” to the questions above, you’re not alone.
I mean how many emails, youtube ads and wellness experts are telling you that they have discovered “the secret formula” to reversing aging and returning health and vitality?
And if you are feeling annoyed because the last thing you want to spend another second on is a gimmicky health blog, trust me, I GET YOU.
And I’M WITH YOU!
Coz let’s face it.
You already know that big food companies manufacture foods that make them more money, not foods that help you be more healthy.
And in the process, they’re selling you foods that are making you sick.
You are smart and proactive, so you look for an alternative.
You turn to health specialists, nutritionists, homeopaths, and wellness experts. And instead of helping you, they fill you with fear, and take more of your money.
They tell you why somehow now kale can kill you, and offer you expensive “programs” that you cannot live without!
You feel sold out by the mainstream food companies, and then frozen with fear and duped by the “alternative health” industry.
THIS is why I decided to write this blog!
Because I want you to:
- Protect yourself against the mainstream ‘food addiction’ & alternative health industry ‘food fear’.
- Reconnect with food basics – healthy eating & nutrition is really simple!
- Help your body heal & regenerate.
- Make space for “food enjoyment”
And THIS is why I harassed a very dear friend, Marc Neumann, international best-selling author of Fearless Presence & Did I Eat Toxic? And founder of Foodicyn – nourish yourCELLf!
to help me bring to you the simple, educational, convenient, and cost-effective principles of healthy living.
And he shared with me the 6 principles that helped him heal his body from 12 diseases, and stop taking 14 medications. And yes, he did that by:
- Buying readily available food off the counter.
- Integrating easy to implement food habits.
- And spending significantly less on his health and wellbeing than he did… EVER.
Principle 1 – ALKALINE IS ALIVE
When we go to buy food from a store, we expect it to have a label. And the first thing we look at is the nutritional label.
If we are health conscious, we count our macros:
If we are a little more rigorous, we limit:
- Trans Fats
These definitely help.
They are NOT what what keep a human body thriving.
They are NOT what brings an unhealthy body back to life.
What keeps a human body thriving, what brings an unhealthy body back to life is food that is alive.
Most of the food mother nature created in the raw is alkaline.
So for the most part, food that is alive is alkaline.
Most specifically 95% of fruits and veggies are alkaline.
In his book, “The Biology of Belief”, the American biologist Bruce Lipton brings a new understanding to cellular functioning and healing.
He describes the cell membrane as the “gatekeeper of the cell”. He says that “if the environment is correct, the cellular membrane allows the cell to absorb nutrients and release toxins. If it isn’t, the membrane locks the cell out.”
Which is wild, considering what Dr. Polly Patsy, Cancer Research Scientist shared: “the biggest problem with finding a cure for cancer is understanding how to get the cells to take in nutrition.”
Is it possible that creating the “correct environment” can help cells regenerate and heal?
And what is the “correct environment”?
We’ve moved to a highly acidic diet, when our cells are designed to function optimally in a more alkaline environment. Can we cure cancer through food? The truth?
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, there is no miracle food that can prevent or cure cancer, but your overall diet can affect your cancer risk. About 1 in 5 cancer cases can be prevented by eating well, being active and maintaining a healthy body weight.
But we can, through eating enough legumes and fresh fruits, veggies and nuts, return our bodies to an alkaline baseline that promotes cellular regeneration and healing.
The goal is: To consume enough alkaline foods that your cellular environment is optimized.
Grazing a few fruits and veggies here and there won’t cut it.
Still when you are feeling hungry, reaching for those whole foods, the dark leafy greens, fruits, veggies, and nuts builds a better habit.
If you are looking to prime your body for healing, building the majority of your diet around alkaline based food is where the transformation is.
This is why juicing is promoted! To help you get enough alkaline food into your system to tip the scale towards an optimally alkaline environment.
Principle 2 – E-Z ENZYMES
We know that we need our probiotics and our prebiotics.
We shop for them in capsules from Shoppers.
But what are enzymes really? And where do we find them?
Enzymes is another word for life. Enzyme-rich food is food that still has life inside of it. And when we cook food or expose it to pressure, the majority of enzymes die.
Most bottled off-the-shelf juice is “cooked” or pressed in a pressure chamber. We use the word pasteurized to describe it.
This makes shipping it easier, cheaper, and lower risk.
It also extends its shelf life.
What you miss out on is the benefit of enzymes.
And then, home juicing often uses a centrifugal juicer which heats up what you are juicing to over 108 degrees. This kills the enzymes in your juice.
Here’s the thing though, we need enzymes
- For digestion,
- For liver functioning,
- For respiration,
- For muscle and nerve functioning.
Enzymes are absolutely essential for a “correct cellular environment”.
We need enough food that is “living” to supply us with enough enzymes.
Which means again: building the majority of your diet around alkaline based raw food is where the transformation is.
Principle 3 – Have Full Fiber Food that is Fit for Function
We know that fiber is important.
It helps us control our hunger. It helps control blood sugar. It helps us lower LDL (bad cholesterol). It reduces inflammation. It helps us reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer.
Well, not all fiber is the same.
We have insoluble fiber, and soluble fiber. Both are essential in proper colon functioning and excretion of waste.
Insoluble fiber is like the hard deck brush that scrapes off dirt, while soluble fiber is the fine brush that gathers and sweeps the smaller and finer waste.
Also, soluble and insoluble fiber perform different functions! Having one does not substitute the need for the other!!
Insoluble fiber prevents constipation and curbs your appetite while soluble fiber lowers cholesterol and controls blood sugar levels.
As a rule of thumb, everything we buy in a box or a can does not have soluble fiber. Man-made food only has insoluble fiber.
Soluble fiber is attached to life. It is the holder of everything pure and natural.
Fruits and veggies? Well, they have both!
So if you are buying store-bought food and hoping it satisfies your daily fiber quota…
remember that you are not giving the cells everything they need to do their job properly, to heal, regenerate and thrive!
What do you need to do?
That’s a tough one 😉 Eat more fruits and vegetables!
To have “enough” chomping helps, but it is not gonna cut it!
You need to drink your fiber.
And in case you are wondering, so many of the juicing companies “juice” their fruits and veggies, which means they take out the fiber.
You need to drink your fruits and vegetables. So blend them whole!
Principle 4 – Small & Mighty – Vitamins & Minerals
The next time you go to the grocery store, pick up any canned or boxed food and look for the labels.
You will find “PURE”, “ORGANIC”, “HEALTHY” in BIG BOLD LETTERS.
Then, you will find the nutritional label displayed in moderate font size.
You will find the “ingredients” label.
Yup that thing written in tiny, tiny font, where anti-nutrients, and all the “non-foods” lurk. This is where they hide (and hide, and hide) all the stuff they don’t want you to see.
So things to keep in mind:
1- Eat nutrient-dense food
Yes, macros count.
But we are not making micros count nearly as much as we need to!
Cells need the appropriate amount of minerals and vitamins to function optimally.
And this is where nutrient-dense foods count!
And you will find nutrition in whole nature-made foods.
That you know.
2- Improve the Absorption of Vitamins and Minerals
Well, this means that all these anti-nutrients block the proper absorption of vitamins and minerals. So as much as possible, reduce the amount of stuff that is filled with anti-nutrients.
Eat alkaline, enzyme & fiber rich foods! Proper elimination of waste, the right pH level in a cell, and living enzymes are what enable your cells to absorb nutrition properly.
So even in the presence of “not so good” foods, having the right foods goes a long LONG WAY!
Principle 5 – Water Works Wonders
You need to drink enough water.
That is not news.
And you fall off and on the water wagon.
One week you have your recommended dose of 2-3 liters. The next, you remember that you forgot to count, and probably had 2 glasses a day… at most!
And you read this useful little tidbit of health info over and over, inserted as one of many (many) other recommendations.
Truth is, water is life!
For optimal cellular health, you need water!
What you probably don’t focus on though is that raw fruits and veggies are made up of no less than 70% water. And in some cases up to 97%!
So have more fruits and veggies, and you will hydrate your cells.
Principle 6 – Eat for Health AND for Enjoyment
“We are not only the human body, we are the human experience.”
– Marc Neumann
We are meant to eat food, not only as medicine, but also for the sheer enjoyment of it.
There is no shame in that, and we do not need to stop eating and drinking for joy and merriment.
What we need is context.
We are here to celebrate life every day. And to do that, it is better to be healthy. Because when we are unhealthy, it is not easy to celebrate life.
So what we need is balance.
We need to balance the cellular, functional needs of our bodies – the need for the proper environment and the appropriate nutrition that will help us keep going…
Against our genuine desire to experience life and enjoy its bounty.
As a rule of thumb, Marc consumes 75% of his food in a day to satisfy his body, and 25% for the experience.
He’s developed a system where he drinks his fruits and veggies:
- In the right amount
- Keeping sugar in check
And he eats his nuts & seeds, sprouted, to give his body the right vitamins & minerals.
He knows that the last meal of the day is for him to enjoy and the rest of the day is for his body to heal and regenerate.
And he knows that no matter what he eats in that last meal of the day, he will start the next day, EVERY DAY with giving his body what it needs to thrive!
What we are often missing is the right understanding, the right context, and the right balance!
