Good morning!

I’m feeling a little nervous.

And that’s because there are very (and I mean VERY) few topics that have received more coverage than our topic of the day.

And no, it is not gratitude. In terms of how much rep it’s got though, it is close, very close.

Deep breaths.

In the spirit of new energy, new beginnings, and the new year, I’m choosing to chat with you about: Morning Routines.

One of my least favourite things is to listen to someone talk about something that is straight-up – cliche; tackling something that is this overused feels lazy and uninspired.

In the words of Rainer Maria Rilke to the young poet who asked him to critique his writing: “Don’t write love poems. Avoid those forms that are too facile and ordinary: they are the hardest to work with, and it takes great, fully ripened power to create something individual where good, even glorious, traditions exist in abundance.

And let’s face it, morning routines are the love poems of personal development.

So why am I choosing this topic? Not coz I believe that I am a fully ripened power (I am working on it though ;)).

It is because creating an effective morning routine is the Windex of Personal Development (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you haven’t seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY ABOUT MORNING ROUTINES?

According to a study conducted by biologist Christoph Randler, people whose performance peaks in the morning are better positioned for career success because they’re more proactive than people who are at their best in the evening. They are the people who agreed with statements such as “I spend time identifying long-range goals for myself” and “I feel in charge of making things happen.”


MORNING ROUTINE – THE BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU ARE MAKING

Since a worthwhile morning routine is the closest thing you’ll get to a silver bullet, EVERYONE (and everyone’s everyone) is trying to capitalize on it:

  • Go for a run: it boosts endorphins;
  • Go for a walk: … and while you are at it, jam your brain with the latest industry-specific knowledge to get ahead and listen to our podcast;
  • Meditate: take 30 minutes to ohm your way into bliss first thing in the morning and you be amazed at the results;
  • Journal the 10 things you are most grateful for and watch blessings abound effortlessly;
  • Get on that Peloton, crush your fitness goals first things in the morning (we don’t crush anything else – promise!);
  • Envision your goals: really put the power of intention behind every vision and get crystal clear on what you want in your life. You are 46% more likely to get there (the 46% – that is a fact).

Each of these tools is extremely effective.

AND YET, that is not a morning routine. That is a whole day!

And now you have to CHOOSE. And we all know the science behind having this many choices: we get more stressed and we just drop it all and go for a Starbucks.

Worse, our morning routine becomes yet another distraction pulling us away from what we actually need to tackle in our lives to create the results we need to feel really and meaningfully fulfilled.

Where did we go wrong?

We lost the forest for the trees.


MORNING ROUTINE – WHY DO WE HAVE IT?

Any morning routine worth anything must serve ONLY TWO GOALS:

#1 PUT US IN THE RIGHT STATE: its job is to help us connect with the emotional frequencies and mindsets that gear us to be calm, productive, joyous, at ease, etc.

#2 GET US TO TAKE PROACTIVE ACTION REGARDING OUR #1 PRIORITY: our morning routine must help us get moving on what is most important to us.

People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. – Steve Jobs

If our morning routine is not doing that, it is not serving us. If it is doing 1 out of those 2 things, it is not serving us.

I cannot emphasize this enough, for our morning routine to work, it absolutely must do two things really REALLY well. It must 1) help us feel our best. And it must 2) help us take big bold action on what is most important to us.

Anything else can be a bonus if we actually have the time for it. Anything else, you can add into your morning routine once you have unstoppable momentum in what is most important to you.
